Blackjack Splitting Rules: When to Split Pairs

Understanding blackjack splitting rules is crucial for maximizing your advantage at the table. Splitting allows you to turn one hand into two, potentially doubling your winnings. But not all pairs should be split—some moves hurt your odds.

Basic strategy provides clear guidelines on when to split based on your pair and the dealer’s upcard. This guide walks you through each pair, explaining the math and reasoning behind optimal splitting decisions.

What Is Splitting in Blackjack?

Checklist: license, payout time, bonus rules, mobile play, support hours.

When you’re dealt two cards of the same value, you can choose to split them into two separate hands. Each hand receives a new card, and you place an additional bet equal to your original wager. You then play each hand independently.

Splitting can be powerful when used correctly. For example, splitting 8s turns a weak 16 into two chances to improve. However, splitting 10s or 5s usually reduces your edge. Knowing which pairs to split is essential for strategic play.

Pairs You Should Always Split

Aces and 8s are universally recommended for splitting. Two Aces give you two chances at blackjack, while two 8s total 16—a losing hand. Splitting them improves your long-term outcomes.

Here’s when to split:

  • Aces: Always split, despite some casinos limiting to one card after splitting
  • 8s: Always split, even against a dealer 10 or Ace
  • 2s, 3s, and 7s: Split when dealer shows 2–7
  • 6s: Split against dealer 2–6
  • 9s: Split against dealer 2–9, except 7
These moves are backed by statistical analysis.

Pairs to Never Split

Never split 10s or 5s. A pair of 10s is already 20—a very strong hand. Splitting them risks weakening both hands. Similarly, a pair of 5s totals 10, which is ideal for doubling down, not splitting.

4s should also not be split. They’re better played as an 8, with potential to hit or double depending on the dealer’s card. Sticking to these rules avoids costly mistakes and keeps your strategy sound.

How Splitting Affects House Edge

Proper splitting can reduce the house edge by up to 0.3%. It gives you more control and increases win potential when the dealer is weak. However, incorrect splitting—like splitting 10s—can increase the house advantage.

Always consider the dealer’s upcard. For example, splitting 9s against a dealer 7 is unwise because the dealer likely has a strong hand. Use a basic strategy chart to guide your decisions and avoid emotional plays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resplit after splitting a pair?

Some casinos allow resplitting if you receive another pair after splitting. Rules vary, but many allow up to four hands. Always check table rules before assuming resplitting is permitted.

Do I get blackjack after splitting Aces?

No, most casinos treat a 10-value card after splitting Aces as 21, not blackjack. This means you only get even money, not the standard 3:2 payout.

Should I split 4s in blackjack?

Generally, no. A pair of 4s is better played as an 8. However, in single-deck games with double after split allowed, splitting 4s against dealer 5 or 6 can be optimal.

Play responsibly. Gambling can be addictive. Set a limit and stop if it stops being entertainment. 18+.
