When to Hit in Blackjack: A Basic Strategy Guide

Knowing when to hit in blackjack is the core of a solid playing strategy. This decision, based on your hand total and the dealer's upcard, directly influences your long-term odds. While luck plays a role, following basic strategy can significantly reduce the house edge over time.

This guide breaks down the fundamental rules for when to take another card. We will cover the essential scenarios for hard hands, soft hands, and when the dealer's visible card changes your optimal play. Understanding these principles helps you make mathematically sound decisions at the table.

Hitting with Hard Hands

Checklist: license, payout time, bonus rules, mobile play, support hours.

A hard hand is any hand without an Ace, or where the Ace counts as 1 to avoid busting. The basic rule is simple: you should always hit on any hard total of 11 or less. With a total of 12 to 16, your decision depends heavily on the dealer's upcard.

For example, you should stand on a hard 12 if the dealer shows a 4, 5, or 6, as they have a high chance of busting. Conversely, you should hit a hard 12 against a dealer's 2, 3, or 7 through Ace. Always stand on hard 17 or higher.

  • Hit on hard totals of 11 or less.
  • Stand on hard 17 or higher.
  • Hit a hard 12-16 against a dealer's 7 through Ace.
  • Stand on hard 12-16 if the dealer shows a 4, 5, or 6.

Playing Soft Hands

A soft hand contains an Ace valued at 11, like Ace-6 (soft 17). These hands are advantageous because you can hit without risk of busting. The strategy for soft hands is more aggressive, allowing you to improve a moderate total.

Generally, you should hit on soft 17 or less. With a soft 18, the play varies: stand if the dealer shows a 2, 7, or 8, but hit if they have a 9, 10, or Ace. Always stand on soft 19 or higher.

Considering the Dealer's Upcard

The dealer's visible card is the most critical piece of information. A weak dealer upcard, like a 5 or 6, indicates a high probability they will bust. In these situations, you play more conservatively, often standing on lower totals yourself.

When the dealer shows a strong card like a 7, 10, or Ace, you must be more aggressive. You need to try and build a stronger hand because the dealer is less likely to bust. This is why you hit more marginal hands against a dealer's strong upcard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you ever hit on 17?

You should never hit a hard 17. However, you should always hit a soft 17 (Ace-6), as you cannot bust and have a good chance to improve your hand significantly.

What is the most common mistake players make with hitting?

A common error is being too conservative with hard totals of 12-16 against a dealer's strong upcard. Fear of busting leads players to stand when basic strategy clearly dictates hitting.

Does the number of decks change when to hit?

Yes, but marginally. Basic strategy charts are slightly adjusted for single-deck versus multi-deck games. For most players, a standard multi-deck strategy provides a very strong foundation.

Play responsibly. Gambling can be addictive. Set a limit and stop if it stops being entertainment. 18+.
