What Does Insurance Mean in Blackjack? A Complete Guide

How the Insurance Bet Works

When the dealer reveals an Ace, they will ask if players want insurance. You can place a side bet of up to half your original stake. If the dealer has a 10 in the hole, their blackjack pays 3:2, but your insurance bet pays 2:1, which offsets the loss.

For example, with a $10 bet, you can place $5 on insurance. If the dealer has blackjack, you lose your $10 main bet but win $10 on insurance (2:1 on $5), breaking even. If the dealer doesn’t have blackjack, you lose the insurance bet and play continues normally.

"Look at payment speed and table limits, not only the headline bonus. A smaller offer with clear wagering often beats a large one you cannot finish."

Understanding what insurance means in blackjack is essential for making informed decisions at the table. Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace, allowing players to bet that the dealer has a 10-value card as their hole card, completing a blackjack.

The insurance bet costs up to half of the original wager and pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. While it may seem like a safety net, statistically, it increases the house edge over time. Most experts advise against taking insurance unless you're counting cards and know the deck is rich in 10s.

Why Insurance Is Usually a Poor Bet

The house edge on insurance is high because the odds of the dealer having a 10 are less than 1 in 3. In a single-deck game, there are 16 ten-value cards out of 51 unseen cards, giving roughly a 31% chance. The 2:1 payout doesn’t cover this probability, making it a negative expectation bet.

Over time, taking insurance increases your losses. Even if it feels like protection, it’s a separate bet with poor odds. Only card counters, who can track the ratio of high cards, might benefit from selective insurance plays when the count is highly positive.

When Insurance Might Be Considered

For most players, insurance should be avoided. However, in live or single-deck games where card counting is feasible, a high true count can justify taking insurance. If you know the deck is rich in 10s, the odds shift in your favor.

Even then, it requires advanced skill and accurate counting. Recreational players are better off declining insurance and sticking to basic strategy, which already accounts for dealer Aces and optimizes long-term results.

  • Insurance pays 2:1 if dealer has blackjack
  • Only offered when dealer shows an Ace
  • Typically increases house edge
  • Worth considering only with card counting
  • Avoid in online games with frequent shuffling

Frequently Asked Questions

Is blackjack insurance a good idea?

No, for most players. The odds are against you, and it increases the house edge. Only skilled card counters might benefit in specific situations.

How much does insurance cost in blackjack?

Insurance costs up to half of your original bet. For a $20 bet, you can place a $10 insurance wager.

Does insurance protect my original bet?

It can offset the loss if the dealer has blackjack, but you still lose the main bet. Insurance is a separate bet, not true protection.

Play responsibly. Gambling can be addictive. Set a limit and stop if it stops being entertainment. 18+.
