What Is Double Down in Blackjack? Rule Explained

In blackjack, to double down is an option that lets you double your original bet in exchange for committing to take one, and only one, more card. It's a strategic move used when the odds of winning the hand are strongly in your favor. This rule can significantly increase your potential payout on a single round.

Understanding when to use this powerful tool is a key part of basic blackjack strategy. Players typically double down on strong starting totals like 10 or 11, especially when the dealer shows a weak upcard. Making this play correctly over time improves your overall expected return.

How the Double Down Rule Works

Casino note: live tables, slots and cashback change often — recheck terms.

After you receive your first two cards and before you take any other action, you can choose to double down. You must place an additional bet equal to your original wager. The dealer then gives you exactly one more card, usually dealt face down. After that, your turn is over, and you must stand regardless of your new total.

For example, if you start with a $10 bet and are dealt a 6 and a 5 for a total of 11, you might choose to double. You add another $10 to the betting circle, making your total bet $20. The dealer gives you one card. If you draw a 10, you finish with 21 and have a $20 bet riding on it.

Best Hands to Double Down

  • Double on hard 11 against any dealer card 2 through 10.
  • Double on hard 10 against dealer 2 through 9.
  • Double on soft 16 (A-5) against dealer 4, 5, or 6.
  • Double on soft 17 (A-6) against dealer 3 through 6.
  • Double on soft 18 (A-7) against dealer 3 through 6.

The most profitable double down situations involve hard totals of 10 or 11. With a total of 11, you have a very high probability of drawing a 10-value card to make 21 or a high total like 20 or 19. With a total of 10, you also have excellent chances of making a strong hand of 20.

You can also double down on certain soft hands, which include an Ace. Common soft doubles include A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5, A-6, and A-7, but typically only when the dealer shows a weak upcard like a 4, 5, or 6. This is because the dealer has a high chance of busting with those starting cards.

When You Should Not Double

Avoid doubling down when the dealer shows a strong upcard, specifically a 10 or an Ace. The risk is too great that the dealer already has a strong hand or will draw to one. Doubling a 10 or 11 against a dealer's Ace, for instance, is generally a losing play according to basic strategy.

You should also avoid doubling on weak totals like 9 or lower. The chance of improving to a winning hand with just one card is not high enough to justify the extra investment. In these cases, the standard play of hitting is the correct strategic choice.

How Casino Rules Affect Doubling

Always check the specific rules of the blackjack table you are playing. Some casinos restrict doubling to certain hard totals only, often 9, 10, and 11. Others offer more favorable rules, allowing you to double on any first two cards, which opens up more strategic opportunities.

Another important rule is whether you can double down after splitting a pair. This is a favorable rule for the player, abbreviated as DAS. A table with DAS and the ability to double on any two cards provides a lower house edge than a more restrictive table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you double down after hitting?

No. The double down option is only available on your initial two-card hand. Once you choose to hit and receive a third card, you forfeit the right to double down for the rest of that hand.

What happens if you bust after doubling down?

If you bust after receiving your one double down card, you lose the entire doubled bet. The rule is the same as if you bust after hitting multiple times; your turn ends immediately, and your wager is collected.

Is it ever good to double down on a soft 19?

No, basic strategy never recommends doubling down on a soft 19 (like A-8). A soft 19 is already a very strong hand, and you should stand to protect it. Doubling risks turning a likely winner into a loser for no strategic gain.

Play responsibly. Gambling can be addictive. Set a limit and stop if it stops being entertainment. 18+.
