Understanding Roulette French Bets and Call Bets

Roulette French bets, commonly known as call bets or announced bets, are a set of sophisticated wagers native to French and European roulette tables. Unlike standard bets placed directly on the table layout, these are bets on specific sections of the wheel as the numbers are arranged physically. Players announce these bets to the croupier, who then places the necessary chips for them.

These bets allow for complex coverage of the wheel with a single instruction, adding a layer of advanced strategy for experienced players. They are based on the fixed sequence of numbers around the roulette wheel, not the random order on the betting felt. Understanding them is key to fully engaging with traditional French roulette gameplay.

The Concept of Wheel-Based Betting

The defining feature of French bets is their relationship to the wheel's number sequence. On a single-zero wheel, the numbers follow a specific alternating pattern of red and black, high and low. Call bets target groups of numbers that are adjacent or positioned in a certain way on this circular layout.

This is different from betting on a 'column' or 'dozen' on the table, which groups numbers mathematically. A wheel-based bet might cover numbers that are spread across different dozens and columns but happen to be neighbors on the wheel. This appeals to players who track wheel sectors or believe in physical biases.

"Look at payment speed and table limits, not only the headline bonus. A smaller offer with clear wagering often beats a large one you cannot finish."

Common French Call Bets Explained

  • Voisins du Zéro (Neighbors of Zero): Covers numbers 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25.
  • Tiers du Cylindre (Thirds of the Wheel): Covers numbers 33, 16, 24, 5, 10, 23, 8, 30, 11, 36, 13, 27.
  • Orphelins (Orphans): Covers the remaining 8 numbers: 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9.

There are several standard announced bets, each covering a pre-defined set of numbers. The most common are Voisins du Zéro, Tiers du Cylindre, and Orphelins. Each bet requires a specific total stake, which is broken down into multiple individual chip placements on corresponding table positions to cover all the numbers in the group.

For instance, a Voisins du Zéro bet covers 17 numbers closest to zero on the wheel. To place it, you would need to announce the bet and stake, and the dealer places chips on a combination of splits and corners to cover those 17 numbers. It's a convenient way to make a complex series of inside bets with one command.

How to Place and Pay for Call Bets

To place a call bet, you must wait for the betting period and verbally announce the bet name and your total wager to the croupier. For example, "Tiers for 30." The dealer will then allocate your total stake across the requisite individual bets on the table. You must have enough chips on the table to cover the total cost of the announced bet.

Payouts work just like the underlying bets. If one of your covered numbers hits, you are paid based on the type of bet that covered it (e.g., a split payout for a number covered by a split bet within your call bet). It's possible to win on multiple covered numbers if your call bet includes overlapping coverage, though this is rare.

Strategic Considerations and Limitations

Call bets are a tool for covering large sections of the wheel efficiently. They can be part of a strategy that aims for frequent, smaller wins by covering many numbers, albeit with a higher total stake per spin. However, they do not alter the house edge; the combined odds are simply the sum of the individual bets made.

A key limitation is that these bets are often only available at high-limit or traditional French roulette tables, both online and in land-based casinos. Furthermore, they require a larger bankroll per spin due to the multiple chip placements. Players should fully understand the composition and cost of a call bet before using them in a real game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make French bets on American roulette?

Typically, no. Announced bets are based on the specific number sequence of the single-zero European/French wheel. The American double-zero wheel has a completely different number order, making the standard French bet definitions irrelevant.

Do online casinos offer French call bets?

Many reputable online casinos that offer French or European roulette with a live dealer will have an interface option for call bets. This is usually a special betting area or a menu where you can select 'Voisins', 'Tiers', or 'Orphelins' with a click.

Are call bets better than regular bets?

Not inherently 'better'. They offer a different way to bet—covering wheel sectors instead of table groups. They don't improve your odds of winning; they just bundle several inside bets together for convenience, which can suit certain coverage strategies.

Play responsibly. Gambling can be addictive. Set a limit and stop if it stops being entertainment. 18+.
